#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poorblack tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more.Henrietta's cellshave been bought and sold by the billions, yetshe remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, February 2010: From a single, abbreviated life grew a seemingly immortal line of cells that made some of the most crucial innovations in modern science possible. And from that same life, and those cells, Rebecca Skloot has fashioned in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks a fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival--left them full of pride, anger, and suspicion. For a decade, Skloot doggedly but compassionately gathered the threads of these stories, slowly gaining the trust of the family while helping them learn the truth about Henrietta, and with their aid she tells a rich and haunting story that asks the questions, Who owns our bodies? And who carries our memories? --Tom Nissley

Abumrad has won numerous awards, including a National Headliner Award in Radio and an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science Journalism Award. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks:

Honestly, I can't imagine a better tale.

A detective story that's at once mythically large and painfully intimate.

Just the simple facts are hard to believe: that in 1951, a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks dies of cervical cancer, but pieces of the tumor that killed her--taken without her knowledge or consent--live on, first in one lab, then in hundreds, then thousands, then in giant factories churning out polio vaccines, then aboard rocket ships launched into space. The cells from this one tumor would spawn a multi-billion dollar industry and become a foundation of modern science--leading to breakthroughs in gene mapping, cloning and fertility and helping to discover how viruses work and how cancer develops (among a million other things). All of which is to say: the science end of this story is enough to blow one's mind right out of one's face.

But what's truly remarkable about Rebecca Skloot's book is that we also get the rest of the story, the part that could have easily remained hidden had she not spent ten years unearthing it: Who was Henrietta Lacks? How did she live? How she did die? Did her family know that she'd become, in some sense, immortal, and how did that affect them? These are crucial questions, because science should never forget the people who gave it life. And so, what unfolds is not only a reporting tour de force but also a very entertaining account of Henrietta, her ancestors, her cells and the scientists who grew them.

The book ultimately channels its journey of discovery though Henrietta's youngest daughter, Deborah, who never knew her mother, and who dreamt of one day being a scientist.

As Deborah Lacks and Skloot search for answers, we're bounced effortlessly from the tiny tobacco-farming Virginia hamlet of Henrietta's childhood to modern-day Baltimore, where Henrietta's family remains. Along the way, a series of unforgettable juxtapositions: cell culturing bumps into faith healings, cutting edge medicine collides with the dark truth that Henrietta's family can't afford the health insurance to care for diseases their mother's cells have helped to cure.

Rebecca Skloot tells the story with great sensitivity, urgency and, in the end, damn fine writing. I highly recommend this book. --Jad Abumrad

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Science journalist Skloot makes a remarkable debut with this multilayered story about faith, science, journalism, and grace. It is also a tale of medical wonders and medical arrogance, racism, poverty and the bond that grows, sometimes painfully, between two very different women—Skloot and Deborah Lacks—sharing an obsession to learn about Deborah's mother, Henrietta, and her magical, immortal cells. Henrietta Lacks was a 31-year-old black mother of five in Baltimore when she died of cervical cancer in 1951. Without her knowledge, doctors treating her at Johns Hopkins took tissue samples from her cervix for research. They spawned the first viable, indeed miraculously productive, cell line—known as HeLa. These cells have aided in medical discoveries from the polio vaccine to AIDS treatments. What Skloot so poignantly portrays is the devastating impact Henrietta's death and the eventual importance of her cells had on her husband and children. Skloot's portraits of Deborah, her father and brothers are so vibrant and immediate they recall Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's Random Family. Writing in plain, clear prose, Skloot avoids melodrama and makes no judgments. Letting people and events speak for themselves, Skloot tells a rich, resonant tale of modern science, the wonders it can perform and how easily it can exploit society's most vulnerable people. (Feb.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
In simple, straightforward prose, Skloot brings to life the woman unknowingly behind some of the 20th century's greatest medical advancements. In the process, she exposes the minefield of scientific, legal, and philosophical questions raised by Lacks's unwitting legacy. Skloot, who deftly weaves together the disparate threads of biography, science, and social history, provides a remarkably evenhanded assessment of the shadier dealings of the biomedical industry despite her obvious affection and sympathy for the Lacks family. Scientifically challenged readers will rejoice in Skloot's ability to explain complex technical processes in layperson's terms. Hailed by the New York Times as "the book Ms. Skloot was born to write," The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks "is an important book, one that will linger--like Henrietta's cells--long after you've turned the last page" (Chicago Sun-Times).

Thank you for this beautiful tribute to Henrietta Lacks
By EJ
Wow. This book should be required reading for scientists and students of life. The true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family has finally been told, beautifully, in this book. The book encompasses science, ethics, and the story of a family who was terribly wronged in the pursuit of scientific research. I could gush about this book for pages but I'll try first to hit the main points of why this book is so remarkable in list form for the sake of brevity:

1. The author clearly developed a strong relationship with the Lacks family, which was absolutely critical to ensuring the story was told accurately and with the respect to Henrietta Lacks that was so deeply deserved.

2. The storytelling is amazingly moving despite the need to convey a lot of scientific information. It reads like fiction.

3. Ms. Skloot's research into the science is impeccable.

4. The book is FAIR. It presents the unvarnished truth, obtained DIRECTLY from as many prinicpal people involved in the story as is humanly possible. It would have been easier to simplify the story into heroes vs. villians, but Ms. Skloot deftly handles all sides of the story.

For some detail: I have worked with HeLa cells in the past, but did not know even the barest information about the story of Henrietta Lacks until a few years ago. It simply was not common knowledge, until a few less ethical folks released her name and medical records to the public. This obviously should not have been done without the express permission of the Lacks family, which Ms. Skloot obtained. In the past, others have not been as ethical. The book covers Ms. Lacks' early life, how her cells came to be harvested, and what happened to both the cells and her family afterward.

The contributions of HeLa cells to science are absolutely staggering and cannot be over-stated. The sections where the science was described were clear and accurate. With the story of Ms. Lacks' family interwoven, this book was fairly close to perfect. I found myself moved to tears several times because of the fate of the Lacks family and Henrietta's daughter's indomitable spirit. I do not think anyone but Ms. Skloot could have written this book. She worked with the family for over a decade in order to get the story right. This was critical, as the family had been wronged too many times in the past.

Thank you for this astounding work of art. I will be donating to the Henrietta Lacks foundation in honor of the entire family, and I hope many others will read the book and be similarly moved.

Captivating, engrossing, fascinating, heartbreaking, englightening...ALL in one stellar book!
By Living it up
This is hand's down one of the best books I've read in years and I wish I could give it more stars. It is going to be difficult to capture exactly what makes this book so outstanding and so captivating, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

First of all I want to say I am STUNNED that this is the author's first book. She has poured ten years of her heart, soul, mind and her life in general in this book. What she has given birth to in that long period of labor is worthy of her sacrifice and honors Henrietta Lacks and her family.

Other reviews have given the outline of this amazing story. What I want to stress is that Ms. Skloot has navigated the difficult terrain of respecting Mrs. Lacks and her family, while still telling their story in a very intimate, thorough, factual manner. What readers may not know is that the Lacks family isn't just a "subject" that the author researched. This is a real family with real heartaches and real challenges whose lives she entered into for a very long season. The Lacks' family has truly benefitted from the author's involvement in their life and that is something I am very appreciative of. I believe that Ms. Skloot was able to give Henrietta's daughter, Deborah, a real sense of healing, deliverance, peace and identity that she had been searching for her whole life...that story alone would have made the book for me.

It would have been very easy for the author to come across as condescending or patronizing or possibly as being exploitive as she wrote about a family that is poor and uneducated. Instead the story is infused with compassion and patience as she not only takes the family along with her on a journey to understand their current situation and the ancestor whose life was so rich in legacy but poor in compensation; she educates the family in the process. I get the sense that the author grew to genuinely love Henrietta and her family. I am in awe of this level of commitment.

The author has managed to explain the complex scientific information in a way that anyone can comprehend and be fascinated by. The author's telling of the science alone and the journey of Henrietta's immortal cells (HeLa) would have made the book a worthy read in itself. Ms. Skloot and Henrietta captured me from page one all the way to the final page of the book. I read it in one pass and I didn't want it to end.

The author manages to beautifully tell multiple stories and develops each of those stories so well that you can't help but be consumed by the book. This is the story of Henrietta. It is the story of her sweet and determined daughter, Deborah. It is the story of the extended Lacks family and their history. It is a story of race/poverty/ignorance and people who take advantage of that unfortunate trifecta. It is a story about science and ethics. It is a story that should make each of us reflect on the sacrifices made by individual humans and animals that have allowed us to benefit so much from "modern" medicine. It is a story about hope and perseverance. It is a story about love and healing.

I cannot imagine a single person I know who wouldn't love this book and benefit from reading it. I will be purchasing the final copy of the book and am looking forward to reading the book again.

I am counting the days til Ms. Skloot writes another book and can't wait to attend one of her upcoming lectures. A fan is born!

2010 Non-Fiction Award Winner?
By R PRIUS
As I recall this book was categorized as CANCER, I believe it might be more aptly described as science based non-fiction. In the last two decades I've seen occasional news items alluding to human cells taken from a black woman in the 1950's that have been replicated millions of times. The cells are referred to as HeLa and on the face of it I wouldn't have thought there was much of a story behind the extraction of these cells and their use by the biomed industry. However, this book dispells that rather naive assumption completely and puts a name and a face, a family, and a story behind the contents of many petri dishes and slides. THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS explains how the cells were obtained, replicated, distributed, and used without informed consent of the owner and family by John Hopkins and how they benefitted mankind w/o compensation to the family. Author Skloot tells the story of a family victimized by socioeconomic conditions and racism that can't get fundamental things like health coverage while these cells make a lot of money for the health establishment. It is a disturbing read that will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. It may also make the reader take a long hard look at the need for standardized health care in our society among many other things.
The one thing that I found fascinating about this book is how Skloot managed to take a generally dry topic that might have been addressed in a scientific textbook and humanized it on a very personal level by developing a close relationship with Henrietta's family. The input received from the family took this book to a higher level and made it a very personsl story. From my perspective, it was very hard not to get involved with the Lacks family and not feel their sense of betrayal and loss.

Intensive Bulgarian, Vol. 1: A Textbook & Reference Grammar, by Ronelle Alexander

This is the first comprehensive textbook teaching English-speakers to read, write, and speak contemporary Bulgarian. The text is designed to be adaptable for students of varying skill levels and can be taught at a gradual or intensive pace. It is also a much-needed reference grammar of Bulgarian, incorporating the latest research and theories on Bulgarian grammar in accessible layman’s language.
Volume 1 introduces the basic elements of Bulgarian grammar and contains Lessons 1–15, a Bulgarian-English glossary, an English-Bulgarian glossary for beginners, and an appendix of verbal forms. Like many popular language textbooks, the dialogues in Intensive Bulgarian form a continuing dramatic narrative that gradually introduces students to both language and culture. Throughout the text, Bulgarian constructions and phrases are compared with English ones to clarify grammar and idioms.

Lessons include:
o dialogues and sample sentences
o exercises and translation sentences
o basic and supplemental grammar sections
o reading selections
o a glossary for the lesson
o cultural notes.

Together, Volumes 1 and 2 of Intensive Bulgarian provide all the materials necessary for teachers and students to learn lively, modern colloquial Bulgarian, to become familiar with Bulgarian cultural life, and to thoroughly understand Bulgarian grammar. Slavic scholars will also find in Volume 2 both a thorough presentation of the Bulgarian verb system, as traditionally conceived, and a new analysis of this system.

Excellent!
By Language Learner
Outstanding book for those who want to improve their knowledge of Bulgarian (not recommended for beginners).
Each lesson features a Dialog, Basic Grammar with lots of examples, Exercises, and Additional Grammar Notes.
The Additional Grammar Notes contain a wealth of great information.
Each lesson concludes with Sample Sentences, Sentences for Translation, Reading Selection(s), and a Glossary.
The glossary entries point out irregular endings. All Bulgarian words are written in Cyrillic and the accent is clearly marked.
Most lessons have interesting Cultural Commentaries which provide great insight into Bulgarian culture and customs.

I didn't like the fact that there are no answers to the Exercises, but the book is so good, that this is just a minor oversight.
Great book. Highly recommended.

Easily the best system to learn Bulgarian
By Blah
This book is definetly the most comprehensive and clear grammar available for the Bulgarian Grammar. It clearly delineates all the major rules and even has notes on many of the minor rules. Some of the rules I was even unaware of(I lived in Bulgaria for two years) This is a two volume set, so make sure you get both volumes. It is a tad expensive bying tswo volumes but it is a much better deal than buying any of those other books. THere is some techincal terms to learn but nothing out of the ordinary for one embarking on serious language study. If you just want a phrasebook to learn some quick words for your three days in Bulgaria then this is probably not what you are looking for. However, if you are serious about learning Bulgarian well then this is the only place to start.

Excellent book to learn Bulgarian
By K G R
This book is an excellent aid to learn Bulgarian. However, unless you have a linguistic and/or Russian background, it will be difficult to teach yourself from this book. This book really requires a classroom environment for those not linguistically gifted. Also, the book needs tapes so that one could hear the pronunciation. Answer keys to the exercises also would help. Overall though, the grammar is well presented. The cultural notes are also very interesting and useful.

This book provides an extensive survey of all the physics necessary to understand the current developments in the field of fundamental cosmology, as well as an overview of the observational data and methods. It will help students to get into research by providing definitions and main techniques and ideas discussed today. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 summarises the fundamentals in theoretical physics needed in cosmology (general relativity, field theory, particle physics). Part 2 describes the standard model of cosmology and includes cosmological solutions of Einstein equations, the hot big bang model, cosmological perturbation theory, cosmic microwave background anisotropies, lensing and evidence for dark matter, and inflation. Part 3 describes extensions of this model and opens up current research in the field: scalar-tensor theories, supersymmetry, the cosmological constant problem and acceleration of the universe, topology of the universe, grand unification and baryogenesis, topological defects and phase transitions, string inspired cosmology including branes and the latest developments. The book provides details of all derivations and leads the student up to the level of research articles.

Used this text in my grad course on the physics of the Early Universe. Couples with Dodelson, Hartle, and Caroll, it makes a great reference.

Not a recommendable book
By jean-michel
The first chapter of this book deals with General Relativity which is a fundamental tool for anyone doing research in Cosmology. However, a quick look on these pages stopped me from further reading and I simply dropped the book. Indeed, the authors invent an anti-symmetry of the Christoffel symbols which simply does not exist. Equations 1.38 in the French edition is plainly wrong. I insist that it is NOT A MISPRINT. They use this nonexistent anti-symmetry to 'calculate' the Lie derivative of the metric tensor, eq 1.57 (something which can, of course, be done by honest means) A first year student could see this if we were not in a time where buzz and show off and the weight of paper spoiled are all so much more important than reflection and thoughtful writing.
I don't know if they use their nonexistent anti-symmetry to 'prove' other true or wrong theorems. I simply lost all confidence in the value of what followed. Who would trust an accountant writing that 3x2 = 5 ? You wouldn't ? Then forget that book.

To Have And To Trusr By Allie Palomino Kindle edition I loved it!
By Okie Gal
i loved this Book! It's been a while since i could really say that and mean it! It has everything in it that you could want! Danger, suspense, love, Lust, laughter, silly giggles! I didn't want it to end! Only one objection that i have, near the end you could tell that the author Allie Palomino cut a lot out to make it shorter for your Kindle! and it was obvious! I never give 5 stars to a book unless i really really liked it.
A Young girl of 19 named Andie was made laird of her Land as all of her family were Slaitered by Alistair a brother of her father! She watched as they were killed but she did escape with a very young little boy and walked, ran to his fathers land! hopeing to get help since she was returning his son! This didn't happen! At first! it's a long story but you will love it I know. please let me know if you dont, it's hard for me to write a review, I write what i like and love to read and no other! I was berated once because i gave a book only 2 stars! Well! i didn't like the darn book so that's what i gave and meant it! I'm much older that most that read the Highlander books! So give me a break!

The Stuff of Dreams: The Weird Stories of Edward Lucas White (Dover Horror Classics), by Edward Lucas White

This original compilation presents chilling tales of terror by an unjustly neglected author. Inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe as well as his own vivid nightmares, Edward Lucas White (1866–1934) weaves a tapestry of weird stories populated by ghouls, monsters, a witch doctor, and creatures of ancient myths.
The collection features White's most famous story, "Lukundoo," a gripping fable of an American explorer who incurs the wrath of an African sorcerer. Other tales include "Sorcery Island," an uncanny foreshadowing of television's The Prisoner, "The Flambeau Bracket," "The House of the Nightmare," "The Song of the Sirens," and five other stories. Additional selections include the haunting poems "Azrael" and "The Ghoula" and an essay in which the author reflects on the influence of dreams in his fiction. Editor S. T. Joshi provides an informative Introduction to White's life and work.

Sleep no more
By Philip Challinor
Apart from the famous "Lukundoo", which treats of the grotesque curse visited on a European explorer by an African witch doctor, this fine collection includes "Amina", a ghoulish encounter which builds up a fine sense of unease on the way to a grotesque climax; "The Flambeau Bracket", a swashbuckling variation on Poe; and "Sorcery Island" where the combination of flawless hospitality and growing threat reminded me a little of Robert Aickman's "The Hospice". Also enjoyable is "The Song of the Sirens", which holds the attention admirably through a slow and detailed build-up. "The Snout" and "The Pigskin Belt" are constructed with similar care, but both are let down by their endings: the former too implausible, the latter too sentimental. Besides the stories, two poems and S T Joshi's typically informative introduction, the book also includeis a couple of brief but intriguing notes by White about finding his inspiration in nightmares. While he obviously cannot have enjoyed the experience (and never even made much in the way of money or reputation from the stories), anyone who has to work out their fictions while still awake must certainly envy him his subconscious.

This was the first I ever heard of Edward Lucas White
By Irene
I had never heard of Edward Lucas White which I suppose is not surprising considering he lived a century ago. The description intrigued me, since as a child I watched those old Vincent Price movies that were based on stories by Edgar Allen Poe and then later read everything by him that I could find in the library. I did enjoy these stories though you must keep in mind that people spoke (and wrote) differently all those years ago. I especially loved the first story Nightmare House about a man who seeks shelter in a run down house after an accident. The Message On The Slate was also very good, about a woman unhappy in her marriage who seeks advice from a clairvoyant who is a self proclaimed charlatan. I loved Lukundoo which concerned a curse. It gave me chills. In The Pig-skin belt a circus comes to town, as does a man with some strange and mysterious habits. My absolute favorite was The Picture Puzzle, in which a man and his wife find solace and perhaps something more when they occupy their time with puzzles after their daughter is kidnapped. I also loved The Ghoula, a poem about a female ghoul.
All in all well worth a read. 4 out of 5 stars from me.

I received an advance copy for review.

By Nicola Mansfield
3.5/5 This is a new author to me and the first few stories did not endear him to me but by the time I'd finished I realised I'd enjoyed more than not and all together they averaged out to a good 3.5/5 rating. He is quite wordy with his descriptions and that is where I thought his downfall was as a suspense writer as it was hard to keep the reader's attention when being bombarded with needless minutia. He did manage to make this work to the stories advantage in some circumstances. After reading the Introduction and end matter I am more interested in finding out more about the author himself than actually reading his other work. His stories were based on his dreams as he was a vivid dreamer. I am also, and can relate to an instance he tells in the afterword of waking from a nightmare and then going back to sleep to finish it!

Introduction - The book starts with an Introduction to the author giving a brief biography, an introduction to his works and discussing his forgotten status in the literary world. Never known for his weird tales, it is they that he is now best remembered. The editor then explains where the stories in this book came from and how he curated them. Not exactly an exciting intro. but since I've never heard of this author before it does a well enough job to introducing me to what I will be reading. All the stories gathered here were written between 1905 and 1909.

1. The House of the Nightmare - A man is cruising in his "machine" and crashes in front of an old house. He meets a boy and spends the night in the supposedly haunted house. It's predictable from the beginning what the shock is going to be so quite a tame story. Pleasant enough reading though I found the writing quite wordy with unnecessary detail. Not an impressive introduction to the author. (3/5)

2. The Flambeau Bracelet - A man gives an accounting of himself after being accused of murder. It's a story from his youth, the justified reason for a duel, with a surprise ending. Very long-winded! (2.5/5)

3. Amina - Finally one that had me going. Taking place in Persia. This starts at the end with the aftermath and some child 'creatures' having been destroyed. Then goes back and tells the tale, how events came to pass and what the creatures actually were. I'm getting used to the author's meandering writing that takes time to get to the point. It works in this story. (4/5)

4. The Message on the Slate - A very long story and the best one so far. A woman goes to see a clairvoyant who confesses to her that he is a fraud; however a dream has brought her to him and he has seen her before in a vision. She wants to open the grave of her husband's dead first wife with whom he is still in love. I liked the writing, this time, it flowed smoothly. He's a wordsmith for sure but the words each had purpose this time. A spooky, atmospheric story. A good ending, but I did figure it out so not exactly shocking. (5/5)

5. Lukundoo - This is definitely a weird tale! Set in Africa, British explorers find a famous one of their ranks is in a nearby village sick and delirious with protuberances all over his body. With a doctor among them, they rush to his aid. They find him near death with an illness nothing medicine can relate too. Pretty gruesome if one uses their imagination to picture the scenes described but also a few parts have derogatory descriptions of African physical features. Another good story, though. (4/5)

6. The Pigskin Belt - Another long tale separated into sections. Starts off quite tedious and as I'm used with this author by now, wordy. Way too much detail goes into the description of building a house for example. Anyway, the first half has the main character use the n-word a lot and the "negroes" all speak as if from a Mark Twain book so difficult to read the dialect. This aside, the Colonel is a liked character by all town members black or white. The story did become engaging in the middle when the author got on with the plot which was why the Colonel was so jumpy all the time, carried two holstered guns that shot silver bullets and had some other eccentric ways. I'm beginning to wonder if this was one of those authors paid by the word as this would have been a better story at half the length but nevertheless, the longer I read the more captivated I became with where it was leading to. (4/5)

7. The Song of the Sirens - Terribly tedious, this took me four days to read while not being any longer than the previous tale. A sailing tale of a story told aboard ship in which the title tells us who (or what) the sailors meet. Three-quarters of the story are spent in description mostly not pertinent to the plot, then near the end, the titular tale is told. Boring! (0/5)

8. The Picture Puzzle - Finally a good story that I really quite enjoyed. It's actually a happy ending but has a paranormal element and the story flows well from beginning to end. The story of a miserable couple whose four-year-old daughter has been kidnapped. The only problem (and a big one when read in the 21st century) is that the story's logic is marred by prejudice, being attributed to "ignorant", "stupid", "jabbering" immigrants. (4/5)

9. The Snout - Perhaps the longest story at this point and the best one. A man recounts an unusual tale. He and two other thieves had robbed a recluse billionaire's mansion and the story is a full description of everything they found inside the estate. White's penchant for excruciating detail is put to good use here as each room is described of its contents and the further they go into the mansion the more and more we know that the sole inhabitant (excluding his manservant) is abnormal. Right from the beginning I was trying to guess what it was that the man had seen and I started off wildly incorrect but gradually got closer to the truth as did the thieves as they neared the recluse's bedroom. But just what he/it was, even when revealed, is left mysterious. (5/5)

10. Sorcery Island - Another enjoyable story. This is indeed a "weird tale" but not scary or creepy. A man recounts how he crashed on an island where he met a man he went to school with. The man had made the island his personal private island complete with a small inhabited European village, an Asiatic village of servants and a wildlife preserve. The man describes how he manages to escape once he realises no one is there entirely of their own free will. (5/5)

11 & 12. Azrael & The Ghoula - Two macabre poems. I don't like poetry. No ratings.

13. Edward Lucas White on Dreams: "Preface" to The Song of the Sirens (extract) & "Afterword" to Lunkundoo and Other Stories (extract) - Interesting to get the author's perspective. I'm also a vivid dreamer so I can relate. No rating.

Their Wish List: Soulmates Book 1, by Devi Ansevi

Tank and Gunner worked like dogs for ten years to build Bristol Hotels into a successful business. They were supposed to enjoy a relaxing holiday stay at one of their top resorts. But it seems that Fate – or possibly Santa - has come a-calling.

Transplanted Southerner Aiden Jones was looking forward to spending Christmas in Montana with her best friend Jenna. She almost made it - until the snowstorm hit. Now she's stuck for goodness knows how long at some expensive resort in the middle of nowhere.

Looks like one sweet, sassy Southerner is headed straight to the top of their Christmas wish list.
*****
Warning: This book packs some serious heat. Hot enough to warm your frosty toes. Snuggle up with some hot chocolate and prepare to melt for this sweet holiday menage romance. Not responsible if the smoke alarm goes off.

Rated “Oh my goodness” for explicit language and erotica. For mature readers, 18 and older. Please use the Look Inside feature for more information about its adult rating.

Excerpt from the book:
Gunner was peering at the laser printer under the desk, rocking it back and forth as though to shake some sense into it. The stubbornly silent, not printing laser printer seemed to have nothing wrong with it.

“Why won’t you work, you stupid pile of sh-.”

“Hey, man, watch your language! We’ve got a customer,” Tank hissed, smacking the top of Gunner’s head.

Gunner straightened up, rubbing his head. “Dammit, Tank, I’ve told you to quit smacking me.”

Then he noticed Tank’s gobsmacked expression and turned to see what he was looking at. He was looking at a girl. She had long, curly dark hair. It was so long he immediately thought how it would feel wrapped around his – uh, wait, how old was she? Did he need to wash his mind out with soap?

She was a pretty little thing, at least what he could see of her. Soulful eyes – big and dark. Interesting face, stubborn chin. Right now, she looked like a hopeful kid at Christmas, waiting for Santa to confirm she’d get her number one toy.

“Um, hello?” she asked.

She probably thinks we’re idiots. Gunner thought. We’re just staring at her.

“Hi,” Gunner forced himself to take the lead. Tank was usually the one who talked to people, but he was apparently frozen in place. “Ah…Welcome to Whispering Pines. Do you have a reservation for Christmas?”

“Oh, no.” Her face drooped. “Do I have to have one? Only I just can’t drive any more tonight, it’s so terrible out there. Don’t y’all have a room? If not, I could…I don’t know, sleep in the lobby maybe?” She looked up at Gunner from under her lashes with a hopeful smile. Her lips were pink and sweetly curved, a little pouty right now.

Her voice…it was soft and sweet, with a slight bit of Southern. He could listen to her all day. It wasn’t one of those TV-parodies of a hick accent. She spoke with just a slight lengthening of the syllables, a honeyed slowness.

Hearing her voice apparently jarred Tank out of his stupor. “Oh, no, honey, don’t worry. We have a room. Can I see your ID? We’ll get you settled in a great room. I love your accent, where are you from?” Tank said all this in a single breath. Gunner wasn’t surprised to see her blink rapidly, trying to process the flow of words.

He smacked Tank on the shoulder. “Take a breath, man.” To the girl, “We need your ID and credit card.” He grabbed a sign-in sheet. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Aiden,” she said. “Aiden Jones.”

A Book True to Its Genre
By BmP in StL
Let me start this review quoting directly from the author’s bio: “Fair warning, my books are chock-full of explicit, graphic, and oh yes, did I mention, clearly described sexuality.” There are two important things to note about that statement. First, this book is erotica, so if that is not your genre, read no further. This book is not for you.

Second, and importantly, the author delivers on these promises. The book is chock-full of explicit, graphic sex. And it is clearly described. In fact, I thought this book was quite well written. The storyline is simple – a woman who is stranded in a luxury resort during a snowstorm meets and explores her sexuality with two handsome, athletic, wealthy, and incredibly solicitous men. It also flows quite smoothly. I was surprised when I noted that Amazon listed it as a 344-page book, because it did not feel that long. Additionally, the author spends enough time developing the characters that you develop a feel for their personalities…not to mention their desires and turn-ons.

Finally, I liked this book almost as much for what it didn’t do, as what it did. For example, the story involves two very wealthy and powerful men and one women, who is a displaced Southerner of limited means. There is clearly sufficient grist here for a study in sexual power and politics. But the author has the woman maintain her principles, so that they meet on equal social footing and the difference is never an issue. Or as another example, the two men seemed to have spent much of their adult lives looking for that one woman who completes their sexual identities. Freud would have a field day, but the author only gives a plausible rationale for their orientation, letting the reader move on. So, in the end, you have a story that is an evocative romp through a series of increasing intense sexual encounters managed by sensitive, experienced lovers – nothing more, nothing less.

So, if you are looking for something to warm your toes this holiday season…or maybe even curl them with sexual tension, give this book a try.

I was given an electronic copy of this book in return for an honest, nonreciprocal review.

An unconventional romance
By Cy Wyss
Their Wish List is the story of Aiden, Tank, and Gunner. Aiden is a southern belle who gets trapped in a snowstorm when she’s going north to visit her friend. She checks into a hotel which, unbeknownst to her, is owned by Tank and Gunner. She meets them at the front desk and arranges to fix electronics for them in exchange for a reduced rate. It is love at first sight, basically---for all 3 of them. The story progresses from there at a decent pace, and Aiden’s day or two while the snowstorm passes quickly turns into longer while the three get to know each other, eventually intimately. Is it love? Or a passing fancy? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

I thought the story read like a long lovemaking session. There is plenty of foreplay as Aiden gets to know the men. Then there’s the lead up to the main event, which is considerate and fulfilling. Then there’s the aftermath, including some serious emotional difficulties. The book contained a lot of titillating scenes and action, and very sexy results to different situations. It is definitely 18+ but not at all vulgar. Fans of soft core will appreciate the writing, and fans of hard core will also find something interesting for themselves, especially since this is a threesome and off the beaten path in terms of romance. I liked Their Wish List and you will too.

Everything you'd want for Christmas
By Bookbaby
Sweet and steamy, this one ticks all the boxes I can imagine for a festive romance. Yes it's too good to be true, you don't often find pairs of sweet, very hot, considerate (not to mention loaded and kinky) men every day of the week, but hell, its Christmas, go with the fantasy.
Tank and Gunner run a chain of hotels, both gorgeous, fit and very available. Tank is a huge pussycat (who likes to clean!) while Gunner (who is a gourmet chef) likes things his way only.
Stranded in a snowstorm our heroine is lured into their lives, treated as princess and just about every red blooded, unattached female (most of the attached ones too probably) would love to be in her shoes.
Its sweet, very hot and leaves you wondering why nothing this good ever happens to you. Bring on the mince pies.
