This book gives everything you need to know to become a successful trader. Idk what these other guys are thinking giving this book anything less than 5 stars. This book is great and has helped me TREMENDOUSLY! This is a must read for any trader and the only book I believe you need as a trader. The ForexMindset by Jared is a must read as well. This book discuses the basics of trading that works. As long as you stick to the basics, your solid! K.I.S.S

you get what you pay for... and sometimes you get even less than what you pay for

The title of this review is based on the fact that this book costs only $25. Now, if you hunt around enough through the forest of forex education that you can pay for you will know that $25 is practical nothing compared to what you might pay for other books and/or courses.

Speaking of courses... the author of this book sells a forex education course that carries a price tag of $8000 and while reading this book it very often struck me that this book was written as nothing more than an advertisement for his courses. Yes, this book is that vague... at best.

Take a moment and think about this... the subtitle to this book has the word "patterns" in it but yet if you look in the index at the back of the book you won't even find an entry for the word "patterns". What does that tell you?
Did I mention the word "vague"? At very best this book is vague and is a very general introduction to the box office where you buy your ticket to actually enter the forex trading arena.

Like I said, you get what you pay for and when you pay only $25 for this book that is about all the true value that you will get for your money, which pails in comparison to the vast amount of information that you can pay for and also find for free if you take the time to turn over every stone on the internet that concerns forex trading. You never know what you might find for free.

Allow me to add this. If you are coinsidering buying this book then I assume you are relatively new to forex. If this is the case, your first step should be to explore the psychological aspect of trading. Don't underestimate this suggestion. You will thank me for it. Look for a book called, "Trading in the Zone" by Mark Douglas or an extremely deep and eye opening course offered over the Internet called 80/20 The Trader's Mindset by Chris Matthews. This course is worth so much more than you will pay for it you will be truly amazed. The bonus materials alone are worth the price of the course.

As far as nuts and bolts trading education goes, look into two products by Dean Saunders named The 10 Minute Forex Wealth Builder, or The Forex Blade Strategies.

Lastly, do not start out trying to scalp on short time frames. Scalping is the worst place to start forex trading. Start learning and trading on 4 hour and daily charts first... it is much easier and much less stressful than scalpling off short time frame charts.

Malcolm Bradbury is a novelist, critic, television dramatist and Emeritus Professor of American Studies at the University of East Anglia. He is author of the novels Eating People is Wrong (1959); Stepping Westward (1965); The History Man (1975); which won the Royal Society of Literature Heinemann Prize and was adapted as a famous television series; Rates of Exchange (1983) which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize; Cuts: A Very Short Novel (1987), also televised; and Doctor Criminale (1992). His critical works include The Modern American Novel (1984; revised edition, 1992); No, Not Bloomsbury (essays, 1987); The Modern world: Ten Great Writers (1988); From Puritanism to Post-modernism: A History of American Literature (with Richard Ruland, 1991) He is the author of a collection of seven stories and nine parodies, entitled Who Do You Think You Are? (1976), and of several works of humour and satire, including Why Come to Slaka? (1986), Unsent Letters (1988; revised edition, 1995) and Mensonge (1987). Many of his books are published by Penguin. In addition, he has written many television plays and the television 'novel' The Gravy Train and The Gravy Train Goes East. He has adapted several television series, including Tom Sharpe's Porterhouse Blue, Kinglsey Amis's The Green Man and Stella Gibbon's' Cold Comfort Farm, now a feature film.

A concise and enriching look at the history of American Literature

An exceptional book for a concise, in a nutshell history of American Literature. I was assigned this book for a graduate class, which was surprising considering that it inexpensive. It's a book I've returned to and plan on returning to in the future.

Literature History in a fun and readable medium

I was so tired of boring text-book style reads in which I was being lectured from the pages and lacked any kind of involvement or attachment to the sibject matter. I expected the same from this book and was dreading reading it when it was assigned for an American Literature class. I was sorely disapointed but in a good way! The authors have found a way to balance information with approachableness and for once I didn't feel lectured, but rather engaged in the subject matter. It was so good I read beyond what was required for the class and finished it. If you are taking an American Lit class, I recommend it even if your professor doesn't and if you are interested in writing I would recommend it also as it is enlightening and a good read!

If I taught American History in college I would require this book! I have been teaching American Lit for high school students for the past 7 years and I believe that this is a fantastic addition to my library. It adds a fullness and historical insight into the events of the periods, and best of all, it has suggested works that I am now using in my class.

Gr 10 Up-History, high culture (thought and religion; literature, art, and architecture; the performing arts), popular culture (leisure activities, holidays, fashion, the media), and topics of sociological interest (marriage, gender, children, and education) are all clearly presented, from tsarist Russia to the recent years of the Russian Federation. While much of the historical information can be found in references such as The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Russia (Cambridge, 1994; o.p.) and in books on each topic, the strength of Schultze's book is that it offers an array of informed commentary in a concise format and gives excellent coverage to the past decade. For example, there is up-to-date information on the status of women, changes in the media and the arts, and much more. The author knows the culture well and does a good job of contextualizing the material with only occasional lapses into lists. There are suggested readings at the end of each chapter, a glossary, and a six-page bibliography. However, the illustrations are disappointing-a mere 16 pages of grainy, black-and-white photos that have been inserted in the middle of the book. In addition, the crude map seems to indicate that Russia and Turkey share a border, and, while two Siberian rivers are marked, the Volga, which is so important to Russian culture, is not. Schultze (classical and modern languages, Univ. of Louisville) has written an exhaustive description of Russia's geography, history, religion, society, education, food, and the arts, making this an excellent, introductory reference work. She presents the information in a factual manner, with little interpretation. James Billington's The Icon and the Axe (1968; Peter Smith, 1994. reprint), aimed at graduate specialists in literature or history, is superior in its interpretations and concentration on cultural history but omits Russia's daily life. Genevra Gerhart's The Russian's World (Harcourt, 1995) provides a wealth of detail on individual life and personal relations, with an emphasis on Russia's rural heritage, but it presupposes knowledge of Russian and is more appropriate for the advanced student. Schultze describes an urban Russia for readers with a minimal knowledge of Russia; it is particularly suited for high school students and beginning college students. The book is divided into chapters (as stated above), almost every one containing suggested reading (and in one part online suggestions). Most are subdivided into pre-1917 or pre-revolution, revolution, and post-revolution parts. Also has good information on current Russian television programs, movies, and periodicals.

This book provides an excellent overview of Russian culture. However, the reader must have access to some source for viewing/reading the material discussed, since there are few reproductions of texts or artwork.

About the Author

Laurent Rosenfeld has been a software engineer for about 20 years, working especially as a contractor for one of the largest telecommunication operator in Europe, particularly in the field of mobile networks. Over the last few years, he has been working especially in the fields of data migration, data quality, and data munging. He has written a number of tutorials on Perl 5 and Perl 6.

Allen Downey is a Professor of Computer Science at Olin College of Engineering. He has taught at Wellesley College, Colby College and U.C. Berkeley. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley and Master's and Bachelor's degrees from MIT.

The Heart of the Beast

An outstanding book that explains the genesis of the ZR-1 Corvette from pre-production to its completion of the model run in 1995. A great book and easy read that explains and details all the roadblocks and barriers that almost caused this model of Corvette not to go into production. The book contains great photographs and very interesting perspectives from engineers, designers and GM management/GM supervisors. A very good historical reference that details in short order what the Heart of the Beast is truly about and the mystique all owners share in owning a small bit of Corvette history. A must have for all ZR-1 owners and those who plan on owning a ZR-1 someday.

The Greatest Physicists were Mystics, Militant Atheists Beware

American philosopher Ken Wilber has done a great service by bringing together in a single volume excerpts from the mystical writings of the world's greatest physicists. Six of the eight men included were Nobel laureates including Einstein, Heisenberg, Schroedinger, Plank, de Broglie, and Pauli.

These are the intellectual giants who gave us the twin pillars of modern physics, relativity theory and quantum mechanics, upon which all of contemporary science rests. Given the popular view that they must have been atheists it is astonishing to learn that all of them were quite explicit in expressing the need for a mystical outlook extending beyond the physical world.

Let's be clear. Wilber as editor has not pulled a few paragraphs out of context. Erwin Schroedinger for example writes of "the mystic vision", De Broglie writes that "the mechanism demands a mysticism", and Wolfgang Pauli speaks of "embracing the rational and the mystical."

None of these men were particularly 'religious' however. The popular religions of today (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc.), may be viewed as specific theories of Ultimate Reality (this reviewer's characterization). They all make specific statements - some empirically testable, many others not - about people and events in the physical world and how these related to God, or Allah, or All That Is, or some similar term.

Mysticism on the other hand is not a religion but a path to understanding. It has nothing to do with religious creeds or doctrines, or whether or not there is a personal God, and certainly nothing to do with science which is something else entirely. Mystics simply believe on the basis of personal experience that there is likely to exist another level or levels of consciousness beyond that of the five senses. Through rigorous mental practice they believe that it is possible to access wisdom and insight from that level which represents the highest or ultimate reality.

Individual mystics may personally identify with one religion or another but the practice of mysticism as a path is found in all the major religions and is, in and of itself, areligious. This point is unfortunately muddied in Wilber's otherwise quite interesting introduction where he equates religion with spirituality (p.18), something most thoughtful people would probably strongly reject. One can be deeply spiritual without committing to any specific set of religious doctrines.

Finally, I feel compelled comment on Wilber's assertion that the physicists would reject so called New Age books like "The Tao of Physics" and "The Dancing Wu Li Masters". The key argument of such books is less that physics "proves" Taoism or Buddhism or some other form of Eastern esoteric thought but rather that seemingly bizarre and unbelievable statements about the nature of space and time and reality made by practitioners of these traditions appear to be supported by the findings of modern physics. (Cf. for example G. Zukav, "Wu Li Masters", p. 256 and especially p. 331).

For the last hundred years or so science and religion have declared a truce in their war for the allegiance of the mind of Man. Science would to stick to matters of the physical world while religion would stick to matters of the world beyond the senses. However as much as both sides, including Ken Wilber, would like to keep it that way, the march of scientific knowledge takes us ever forward toward a world view that challenges our most basic assumptions about the nature of human reality.

I am speaking here specifically of entanglement, the now widely accepted principle in physics that particles really do influence each other without regard to distance or time, that is, they interact instantaneously even if they are separated by billions of light years. This was scientifically demonstrated in 1982, the year before Quantum Questions was originally released, and has been confirmed repeatedly since then. Even more disconcerting are recent experiments which seem to imply that actions in the present (as we perceive it) can actually alter events that have already been recorded in the past. (Cf. Amir D. Aczel, "Entanglement: The Greatest Mystery in Physics", 2003).

However troubling such findings may be to our everyday conception of 'reality', they merely confirm Max Plank's famous statement that "those who are not shocked when they first come across quantum theory cannot possibly have understood it."

The shocks keep coming and they are getting stronger whether we like it or not. Will they lead to a total paradigm shift in our conception of reality?

Opens A Whole New World

I am buying a copy to replace one I gave away. I can't be without this book. I had it on the shelf for 10 years before I read it last year; I wish I had not waited. As a research scientist I tend to think science governs all, and yet my own experiences suggest otherwise. This book addressed that paradox and opened my mind to considering several other possibilities. It is NOT all cliches, nor vague or difficult but it is written for an intelligent thinker.

Will Blow Your Freakin' Mind!!!

I was ready to hate this book, ready to do battle with another soft-headed New Ager who, in a mirror image of the lab coat creationists, wants to bend science to their will, to appropriate its authority to help sway, even coerce, for the sake of their grand cause. Was I surprised! Wilber's introduction is a pellucid repudiation of The Toa Of Physics and The Dancing Wu Li Master and a devestating blow to the even less legitimate "What The Bleep Do We Know." Wilber even abandons his own earlier views on physics supporting his mysticism. Why? Because he read these founders of New Physics, and not one of them believed that their work supported it. And this wasn't out of their ignorance of Eastern thought. No, in fact, each of these great thinkers is well versed in mysticism and, ultimately, they are mystics themselves! Wilber makes it clear that (opposed to my belief that science can only become mysticism henchman if you lessen science) that only by lessening your mysticism can you claim it's proven in the lab. And pragmatically he argues that by hitching your mysticism to the science wagon, you are (as was the case with Capra) subject to the further results of experiments that might disprove your theory. Science is, after all: provisional, changing, abstract and only intelligible in the language of mathematics. Mysticism, on the other hand, is unmediated, absolute and ever-true. Not that Wilber walks away from his dialogue with these great scientists disillusioned. His Mysticism is firmly intact. He just admits that science is not the way to get there, except in the sense that a profound understanding of physics gives you a profound understanding of its limits, of its failure to address being as such. And it is this deep understanding that lead all these scientists to their mysticism. Science should be left to scientists and Religion to the religious. Why would you want to mix the two? Only if you want to coerce, only if you are too weak to look Shiva in the eyes. This book changed me, I hope you can read the introduction with an open mind.

absolutely incredible first-hand account

This is an absolutely amazing must-read account of Shirley Collins' journey with Alan Lomax throughout the 1950s American South. Great description of the country and atmosphere by a foreign and interested comrade. This is by all accounts a not-to-miss story of the blues, folk, and country music that existed at the time. If you are interested in ANY of these genres in any way, shape, or form, or the way this trip inspired Shirley to re-examine the traditional music of her own homeland (southern England, namely Sussex), this book is an ABSOLUTE must-read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I definitely read this whole book in two days. That is a testament to its greatness. Buy it NOW!

A Beautiful, Fantastic Trip To a Lost America.

What a beautiful, interesting book. I recently discovered the gorgeous music of Shirley Collins, and after much googling found out she had written a book!

The book is half autobiographical narrative of her childhood and upbringing, and the other half a narrative of her travels with Alan Lomax across the south of America making field recordings. Her story is especially prescient giving the recent release of Lomax's entire catalogue online.

The writing is conversational, and personal, and really gives you a sublime feel for the heart and soul of Collins. Her descriptions paint a vivid picture of America long gone, and of an England long gone as well. We get an insiders look in what the folk and blues roots of American music were built upon.

The book is heavily supplemented with photographs and letters from her trips, which make the book almost feel like a documentary or as if you were on the trip along with her.

The book has history, music, love. Everything you could want from a book. If you don't already love Collins, you absolutely will when you are finished with this fine book.

Good in combination with other sources

I bought this to teach a student in Moscow. There are a lot of things I like about it. For example, each chapter has a section for recognition practice (choose the word you hear) and dictation practice. The accompanying CDs make it easy for the student to work independently of the teacher.

I used this in conjunction with "Mastering the American Accent" which I like because it offers MORE practice sentences which are more challenging than those in "Pronounce it Perfectly". Also, "Mastering the American Accent" has a section in the back, which tells you which sounds to focus on for each language group. This makes it easier to put together a syllabus.

So, 4 stars. A good book, but I like to use it with a second source.
