An Enjoyable Read

After feeling only so-so about Serpent's Kiss, the prequel to this and the second in the Witches of East End series, I went into Winds of Salem not knowing what to expect. However, Winds of Salem managed to restore my love for this series, as it possessed the same charm and witchy goodness that the first one contained.

Winds of Salem picks up a little while after Serpent's Kiss left off. In present day, the Beauchamp family is trying to bring Freya home while dealing with their own wide variety of personal problems, big and small. On the other hand, Freya is back in the 1600s, sent to relive the one thing she'd never thought she have to: the Salem Witch Trials. One of the big problems I had with the second book was the lack of connection I felt to the main characters, but luckily, that problem vanished within this one. I enjoyed how Melissa split the book up into various sections, as it allowed for a well developed sense of what was going on in both worlds and some suspense. In addition, I suddenly seemed to care about the characters once again...something just seemed to click. I particularly enjoyed finding out more about 1600 era Freya as well as seeing more of Freddie who weirdly began to grow on me as the story progressed.

The plot in this was also filled with action and lots of suspense, as mentioned before. I enjoyed seeing more about the Salem Witch Trials. In my opinion, Melissa did a great job of catching the scene and feelings associated with this time, which made the overall reading experience even better. It was also exciting to see what was occurring back in present day, especially when it involved my favorite characters: the pixies. The scenes with them and Freddie were always priceless!

What I liked the most about this book, though, was the ending. Melissa did a great of concluding the major storylines while also leaving room for potential development. In some ways, I really hope she does continue this series.

Sexy, compelling, and magical, Winds of Salem leaves little room for disappointment.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

This is the third volume in the Witches of East End series. The passages of time are closed with Freya Beauchamp stuck in 1692 with no way to get back. Freya must relive the horror of the Salem witch trials while her parents frantically try to reopen the passages and rescue her. If they don't succeed, Freya's life will be forfeited forever. Being immortal will not help her this time and she'll never be reborn again.

This story opens in 1692 and I was immediately pulled into the story. I loved Freya's character as we're given a glimpse of what life in Puritan Salem was like for young maids. Back in present time, Freya's parents are frantically trying to find a way to save her along with her sister Ingrid, the local librarian, who is reading every account of the period she can find. The author does a great job of flipping between present day and 1692 to keep the action moving. I was happy to see more of Ingrid as she tries to navigate loving a mortal man. Will Joanna and Norman find a way to reopen the passages and save their daughter? And what's going on with her twin Freddie? He's searching for his Trident and embarks on a perilous journey of his own. Everything is connected in this wonderful magical journey. It's my favorite book so far, but I would recommend that you read books 1 and 2 to get the full flavor of the Beauchamp family. Recommended.

Only for those of you who can pay for the indicators - but even then not your best choice

FIRST problem: DeMark's indicators are very expensive to subscribe to and they are only availabe in professional software (not esignal or tradestation). This reduces the value of the book for most readers. Nobody is going to hand-calculate indicators.

SECOND problem: The writing in the book is quite opaque so a lot of time and energy is needed to understand the ideas. DeMark is clearly a creative analyst, but I am somewhat sceptical since he has his own indicators for everything. Is it really necessary to reinvent everything? I would have liked DeMark to explain this more clearly.

Perl's DeMark Indicators (Bloomberg Market Essentials: Technical Analysis) is a clearer book. That fixes the second problem, but not the first problem.

Worth it for chapter #1

TD suppy and demand lines. If I only knew before the rules for trendlines I would have save a lot of time and wasted effort. I can't comment on this book past chapter #1 as I've not gone any further. However, this book is worth the purchase many times over just for the proper explaination of trendlines. As this book was recommended to me for the first 2 chapters, I will also recomend it if only for the first. Before I could look at the same chart of a currency pair and "see" different trend lines. Oh, I think that is one. But now I will look at the same chart and see the same trendlines every time. This goes a long way to making trading a repeatable, measurable proccess... essential to success.

Eye opener

Unlike other technical analysis books, which focus on head-and-shoulders and other patterns and simple things like moving averages, DeMark's "New Science" book provides the reader two valuable things: 1) ready-to-implement technical indicators that can be programmed (assuming you have access to the necessary data), and 2) ideas for further research. My personal experience is that I haven't made any money using his indicators. For example, the Sequential indicator used to work but after the Internet bubble I've lost money with this indicator. But it did give me some ideas and made me look beyond things like double bottom which are even less reliable, not to mention difficult to implement.

If you are into trading system building and/or using formulas to create indicators, this is a must-read.

About the Author

Karen Clippinger received her master's degree in exercise science from the University of Washington in 1984. Her lifelong work has focused on the application of scientific principles to enhance alignment and movement performance while reducing injury risk. She is currently a professor at California State University at Long Beach, where she teaches functional anatomy for dance, Pilates, placement for the dancer, prevention and care of dance injuries, and dance science related to teaching technique. Ms. Clippinger has also taught dance anatomy and kinesiology courses at UCLA, Scripps College, the University of Washington, and the University of Calgary. She serves as a faculty member for Body Arts and Science International.

Prior to her appointment at CSULB, Ms. Clippinger worked as a clinical kinesiologist for 22 years. She has also served as a consulting kinesiologist for the Pacific Northwest Ballet since 1981 and has consulted for the U.S. race walking team, the U.S. Weightlifting Federation, and the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Ms. Clippinger has given more than 350 presentations in the United States and abroad. She has taught workshops at many universities and has authored numerous articles and chapters. She wrote an exercise column for Shape magazine for four years and served as one of the founding coeditors in chief of the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science from 1996 to 2005.

Love this text

I have found this book extremely helpful as a reference tool that I use regularly. The illustrations are great - very clear. I like the remedial exercises that are given. I highly recommend it for teachers with some previous anatomical vocabulary. It might be a bit overwhelming for those who aren't familiar with anatomy unless it is used in conjunction with a course in the topic.

Learn Anatomy and Kinesiology all in one book!

This book is one of the best Anatomy and Kinesiology books mixed into one book. For those in the fitness industry this is one of the best books I've come across. We used it for our Anatomy course at our Pilates studio in Wayzata MN. The illustrations are wonderful! Karen's writing and examples makes the information enjoyable. She also uses other examples besides those in dance that are very helpful. Thanks for the wonderful book!

The dance kines bible!

Dance Kines teachers: use this one, not the other one! The students get it, I get it, and the exercises are applicable to all we do. So clear and so useful for just what they need, minus the stuff they don't need, or won't use. The "other" dance kines book was fine for its day but this one is better written and the photos and drawings are WAY better.

Truly an eye-opening book

I've never given much due to investing in assets such as gold or art. I thought gold had no place in a true investor's portfolio and art was "investing" in one's image and reputation, but not in long-term wealth. This book posits a very good theory why I'm wrong now, and in the future. The author comes from a very strong background, and I only found this book after Dylan Grice recommended it.

Any true investor with an ability to extend their investments beyond prototypical mutual funds or etfs will benefit from reading this book. Even if one doesn't go out and immediately buy some silver or start collecting wine, the reasoning and data behind why that is a good idea is worth the price of the book alone.

Excellent primer on market dynamics

Loved this book. Links complex economic factors to the quickly changing market demand for silver, wine, art and gold. It explains why these are crucial investments due to structural issues in our 'new normal' economy. It's easy to digest and a quick read, but Roseman's and Bacon's data often makes you stop to consider their implications. The burgeoning library of books proclaiming India and China as the frontier should use this research a key stepping stone.

Never, Ever Judge a Book By It's Cover...

I have read so many retellings of Beauty and the Beast. It takes a lot to impress me anymore. I was not impressed by this one either...I was astounded and overjoyed. It is so fresh and unique, no matter what the cover looks like.
Here is a slice of plot for you. Rose Hawkins' world is turned upside down by the sudden death of her father. Her world spins out of control when she finds out that her father has left her penniless. So, with very few respectable options, Rose journeys from her home in Chicago to mysterious San Fransisco to become a governess in a wealthy household. She arrives to find that she has been deceived, there are no children, only a wealthy invalid who longs for someone to help with his research. Rose stays and is content...for awhile. Rose is far too intelligent not to notice that things are not exactly as they seem. Where are the servants? Why can't she see her employer's face? And what are the strange manuscripts she must read to him? I don't want to spoil it, so I'll stop right there.
This is a great book. The love story is romantic, but never sappy. Best of all, you feel like they really get to know and understand each other. There is some mystery, adventure, and magic thrown in too. And a rather unusual, but just right, happily ever after.

'Magickal' modern version of 'Beauty and the Beast'

In what is Mercedes Lackey's best novel to date, 'Beauty and the Beast' is updated to 1905, where fabulously wealthy rail baron and Fire Master Jason Cameron has transformed himself into a wolfman and he needs the help of an tame scholar (female so that she is no threat) to help translate the Magickal texts that will give him clues to breaking the spell. Instead of the mouse he expects, he gets a lioness, Rosalind ('Rose') Hawkins, a classicalist and medievalist whom he has brought from Chicago to his San Francisco estate under false pretenses, supposedly to be a governess to his non-existent children. Penniless, she is more than willing change the terms of the initial agreement to do interesting work in luxurious surroundings, even with someone who may be a madman. She eventually learns the truth about Jason and begins to grow as a Magician herself. But Jason has enemies who do not want him to return to human form and full power, or wish to exploit his power for themselves. And then terror strikes, both from Magickal and natural sources....
Lackey has done considerable research into this historical period and does a very good job of bringing early 20th century Chicago and San Francisco to life. She also makes the Cameron mansion, and indeed, all the other locales, into very real places with her rich descriptions - I have noticed that she is particularly good at describing food, clothing and furniture. More importantly for a fantasy novel, she makes the supernatural as real as the commonplace. Her magic systems (Western and Eastern) are extremely well thought out, even 'scientific', and undoubtedly based on 'real' magic systems. There is a nice parallel here to the magic of Valdemar, which is measurable and follows mathematical laws. The story moves at a crisp pace, full of dramatic situations, culminating in the horror of the San Francisco earthquake, and Lackey's style makes the book nearly impossible to put down.
What has always been Lackey's greatest strength is her ability to create characters who one can immediately like and identify with, even in her earliest novels where the technical prowess of her writing was limited. I cared about what happened to Rose from the very beginning. She is a strong, smart, intellectual, adaptable, no-nonsense person, perhaps a bit TOO forward and opinionated, and yes, a little greedy. True, I share her interest in medieval studies, and the fact that she's an opera lover certainly doesn't lower my estimation of her, but I don't think readers who aren't interested in these topics to the extent that I am will also empathize with her. Jason too is a fascinating character - despite his hubris, selfishness, and ruthlessness, he has many moments of sympathy and is Rose's intellectual equal. The repartee between them and their growing affection is believable from the beginning. Yes, I suppose it's 'predictable' that they fall in love - but it doesn't stop one from wanting to see the way it happens. Also many of the 'minor characters', from Professor Cathcart to Earth Master Pao to Snyder to the townhouse maid to the boorish salesman who molests Rose, are vividly drawn, as are the Salamander and Sylph who serve Jason and Rose. And, oh yes, what would a Lackey novel be without a VERY special horse?
I admit, though, that I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the reviewers who complain that Lackey's villains are a little too 'black'. Although Paul Du Mond is a well developed character despite his viciousness, we know that Jason is no saint, so it might have added a bit more depth if Simon Beltaire had a really legitimate reason to dislike him. While unlike other reviewers I didn't have a problem with the climax (an interesting spin on Cocteau), I did feel that Lackey glosses over a MAJOR accomplishment Rose achieves in the epilogue (I'm not referring to romantic matters). I also thought the character names were a bit too 'romance-novelish', but that's picky. To be even more picky, I noticed a few things that apparently escaped the proofreader - at one point Jason calls Rose 'Miss Cameron' instead of 'Miss Hawkins'!
I think Lackey has created a wonderful universe here and I would like to see her write many more novels set in it. Although I enjoyed 'The Serpent's Shadow', I want to see more of Rose and Jason - perhaps Lackey eventually plans for them to team up with Maya and Peter? I am already imagining the adventures they can have. If nothing else, considering how much Rose loves Caruso, I really hope that she and Jason live to see Jussi Bjorling's San Francisco debut in 1949!
Perhaps this book is not 'great literature', as some of the other reviewers seemed to expect, but it doesn't have to be. Even if it doesn't have the philosophical and emotional depth of GREAT SF/Fantasy, it has the sense of wonder and imagination of very GOOD SF/Fantasy. Maybe 'The Fire Rose' is 'mind candy', but it's extraordinarily delicious, and I've sampled it over and over again.

Another Beauty & Beast tale? Before you cry "NO"!.......

OK...another B&B story...what can one expect? At first I wanted to scream "NO...not another one" but I quickly changed my tune.....
This book is more than I expected. A well developed, and well written story with remarkable characters & a different twist to the original form of the B&B tale...This book gives us an unexpected Beauty & the Beast story that will remain well with you....even after the last page is read and the book put away. I actually have this book in my Phantom of the Opera library collection...it sorta reminded me of Erik.....and this book has actually found its way into my "Phantom library" under the genre of "other" books that remind me of Erik.

One Important Question



Early in my career I received some great advice from a very successful CEO who said, "The most compelling question a business needs to ask itself is - What is our unfair competitive advantage?" The reality is that without an unfair competitive advantage the company is destined to compete primarily on price and possibly fall into a place known as "commodity hell."



I have spent more than twenty years creating or evolving brands for clients and the question of unfair competitive advantage still stumps even the best and most prepared corporate executives. The problem is that often, when the company was formed, it had an unfair advantage; however, as the company grew or grew older, it became difficult to maintain. This is why brand, which defines the distinction of "unfair competitive advantage," must evolve over time. There are too many factors to become complacent in this regard -- the competition catches up, the marketplace changes, there is a revolving door of change at the executive level or there is just not a corporate culture of continuing innovation. It is imperative for companies to constantly challenge them-selves to keep this competitive edge and very importantly - aggressively claim their differentiation through a consistent branding program in the market-place.



Much has been said about the global economy, but its existence necessitates creating a sustainable competitive advantage and a clear promise of distinction. That is also why brand distinction should be a corporate initiative and not just a marketing initiative. The CEO and executive team must own the brand for it to be successful. And there are many reasons why.



A branding strategy will never reach its potential unless it is completely aligned with the business strategy and the internal alignment of the entire organization. Secondly, the company's financial valuation is greatly affected by the intangibles (brand) within the organization. In many cases the brand value of the company is greater than the book value of the company. On average the intangible value of stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange represent more than 60 percent of the market value. For this reason alone, it is clear why the CEO should be placing a huge emphasis on the ability to direct the corpo-rate brand. For private companies, the ability to own a clear and defendable position in the marketplace can not only drive top line sales and bottom line profit but also position the company to be very attractive for an acquisition - at a premium price.

I know that some of you already understand the importance of building the brand, but what you may not know is the process of doing so. Great business book from a brilliant mind

Whether you are a marketeer or not, anyone in business will appreciate the thoughtful approach Sandra Sellani has put into her book about knowing your brand quotient. In her book, she analyzes many companies, some name brand and some not, about what they have done to further their brands and what has worked. For anyone trying to build a brand, this book provides amazing insights and case studies. As a PR person who has worked with many name brand companies, I highly recommend it.

Make you think of your branding strategy

We all know branding is important, but it's difficult to measure. Sandra Sellani's "Brand Quotient" doesn't tell us how to evaluate a brand's worth (there are many formulas on the market). Instead, she focuses on the measurements of branding strategy execution.

"What's Your BQ?" is very useful for entrepreneurs or marketing professionals plan their marketing campaigns. Too often marketing campaigns focus too much on short term responds and ignore the long term branding strategy. This book not only provides a test to measure your execution of your branding strategy, it also offers 35 companies' strategy to build their brands. Some stories are very insightful (Netflix, Simple Green), and some are very interesting (Victor Pigs, [...]). These stories make this book a very interesting read and give new ideas of planning the branding strategy.

Don't Just Read It. Read It and JUST DO IT!

Wow! What a gloriously painful experience!

After using the first 25 pages to completely eviscerate my business using her brilliant Brand Quotient model, author Sandra Sellani then guided me through several exercises to put my business back together like the Six Million Dollar Man: "better than I was before -- better, stronger, faster."

Sellani taught me to think in brand-new ways. When I started her "What business are you in" exercise, I thought I knew the answer. But she took me to a whole new level, showing me that I'm not actually in the business of corporate sales training, which was the obvious answer. Instead, the true (but not-so-obvious) answer emerged when I finally wrote "I'm in the business of giving executives hope that their inexperienced, ignorant, lazy or otherwise ineffective salespeople can be turned into a crack team of self-motivated, profitable sales professionals ... or at least that they'll prospect a little more, follow up once in a while, ask for the business periodically, and not leave so much money on the table!" It's nothing I'll use as a tagline, of course, but the knowledge of what I'm really selling -- hope -- will serve me well the next time I'm closing a deal with a company president!

"What's Your BQ" also taught me that a lot of the differentiators I thought I had were not differentiators at all (did I mention evisceration is painful?). But all hope was not lost, because the book also helped me achieve some mental breakthroughs on true differentiation, which promise to make "Mr. Charge Higher Prices" even more profitable -- and that's the whole point, isn't it?

Finally, there are 35 mini company case studies which comprise the bulk of the book, and each is capped off with a short list of insightful questions that allow you as the reader to relate your own business back to the strategies and strengths of the example companies (meaning, yes, you turn up plenty of your own weaknesses -- ouch again!).

I highly recommend this book. Every businessperson should read it, be they executive, entrepreneur, salesperson or marketing professional. I take that back -- every businessperson should DO this book. If you merely read it and don't do the often uncomfortable exercises, you're wasting your time because it will then come across only as a "good" book, instead of the GREAT book that it really is.

This book is the only organic and organized review of plasmas involving particle formation. It provides you with all the basic equations needed to approach the most common phenomena in dusty plasmas. It has a place of honor on my desk and without it my life as a researcher would be much harded.

Too bad that the price is not for every pocket!
