A Collection of Botvinnik's Games

This is my second review of a group of move-by-move books from the Everyman Chess Move by Move series. My review of Capablanca Move by Move appears elsewhere. I didn't like this book as much as the Capablanca book, perhaps because the games are more complex, and for a supposed move-by-move book the annotations are rather sparse. At one point, I counted 8 moves go by without a note. (Moves, not ply, moves!) And then when we finally did get a note, it told us that Botvinnik was preparing to push a passed pawn, which was obvious. In addition, the notes tend too often towards the "poetic" side rather than being informative.

It's a satisfactory collection of Botvinnik's games, but move-by-move it definitely is not.

Good to have if you have an interest in chess. A must for the Botvinnik fan.

I got the Kindle version. For this series, that format is very useful.

As Kindle users know, the books should be read sequentially. One page followed by the next page. Unlike some of the tournament or game collection books I have owned, this book is most profitably read with a purely sequential manner.

For the book itself, the content is superb. I believe Cyrus Lakadawala is one of the best authors out there. This effort is both substantive and enjoyable. Having gone through some of the tournament games, I believe I have knocked off a bit of rust. The path to improvement for many players is the love of study. The content will reward the study with some improvement of play. But in this case the study is quite enjoyable. More so if the player enjoys looking at difficult positions-something Botvinnik also enjoyed.

I highly recommend this book for all players at all strengths.

Very informative

Excellent book. The book investigates 60 games. The games are broken down into the following informative areas: Attack; Defense; Dynamic Elements; Exploiting Imbalances; Accumulating advantages and Endgames. My only gripe, which has been mentioned by most reviewers is that Lakdawala is like the high school nerd who thinks he funny. It's very distracting. For example: " Blacks confused defenders stumble about, disoriented. His pieces receive a memorandum from the bank, warning of a lack of funds in his account and imminent foreclosure to all properties. They find themselves surrounded by screaming creditors and conniving litigants. (pg. 158). The comments add very little to the informative analysis.

About the Author

Frank L. Gardner, PhD, ABPP, is an associate professor and director of the PsyD program in clinical psychology at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gardner is board certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, a distinction that fewer than 5% of licensed psychologists attain. Gardner has 24 years of experience as a practicing clinical psychologist, graduate educator and supervisor, and sport psychologist. He has worked with youth, collegiate, Olympic, and professional athletes. For 19 years he has been highly involved as a sport psychologist at the professional level, working extensively for multiple teams within the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball.

A member of the American Psychological Association (APA), Gardner is one of the first psychologists to receive the Certified Consultant designation by the Association for Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology. He was one of the primary developers of the APA Proficiency in Sport Psychology and has developed the curriculum for the training of sport psychologists for two sport psychology training programs.

Zella E. Moore, PsyD, is an assistant professor of psychology at Manhattan College. She is also associate director of research and development for the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anger and Violence. Moore has been a sport psychology consultant for teams in the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association, and the World Indoor Soccer League. She is a member of the APA and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and she is responsible for teaching and supervising clinical and clinical sport psychology doctoral students.

Required reading

Note: amazon.com have ISBN: 0-7360-5305-0 listed as paperback but it is hardback.

The authors suggest that this text is aimed at sports psychologists, sports psychology researchers and sports scientists. I fall into the sports scientist category.

Throughout the book the authors advocate an evidence based, ethical approach to sport psychology. The text gives numerous references to the research literature and therefore acts as an excellent narrative review assessing both research data and theoretical development. It is also highly critical of many aspects of current practice, outlining the theoretical and ethical errors that underpins much of it. I especially appreciated this honest approach as I am a firm believer in the need for evidence based practice.

After an introduction, the book outlines a theoretical model for the interaction of performance and psychological issues - the 'Integrative Model of Athletic Performance (IMAP)'. I found this chapter slightly confusing since it seemed to go off on tangents, and the rest of the text makes little reference to IMAP. However, the model seems sound and I think a second reading will help in seeing it as underpinning the authors' approach in the rest of the book.

The real meat of the book begins with chapter 3 where they introduce a classification system for assement of client conditions - the Multilevel Classification System for Sport Psychology (MCS-SP). This represents a fundamental shift in sports psych practice as it groups clients into those only needing performance development, those with subclinical issues, and those with clinical issues. They present the rationalle behind this system brilliantly and explain the danger of applying performance enhancement without tackling underlying sub clinical or clinical issues. These themes are developed throughout the book.

Next they present assessment strategies, giving an overview of the role of interviews (structured and unstructered) and psychological tests. They give lots of practical advice and integrate this with the MCS-SP protocol. Perhaps in future editions (this book will last!) this section could be expanded to give a thourough list of appropriate tests available rather than selected references. This is a bit of a nit-pick though.

In the next chapter they review Moore's published systematic review into traditional sports psychology techniques, with depressing findings. This represents a significant result and should shock the profession.

Next they present early findings of their research into mindfullness-aceptance-commitmance (MAC) treatments for performance development. They precede this with a theoretical (including research findings) look at why traditional techniques may not work, presenting a possible fundamental flaw. The data they provide on the MAC is very interesting but they stress the research is in its early stages and not ready to be applied (for example, the sample size used is currently way to small). However, I fear that some may ignore these caveats and look to apply the techniques already. I think the presentation of the chapter could have been more careful with this in mind. However, as a chapter for researchers, it was very interesting and exciting.

In the next 4 chapters they examine evidence based approaches for tackling sub-clinical and clinical issues. These are very interesting and emphasises the need for integration of clinical psychology into sports psychology.

Other chapters include advice on case formulation, ethics (very important), training, and future directions. There are a lot of example scenarios, highlightling subtle concerns for psychologists and giving practical suggestions.

As a sports scientist I would have benefitted from a glossary in the back explaining some of the terms they use. It wasn't too bad (and there's always wikipedia) but the book does assume a lot of prior knowledge. Also, the authors use the word 'holistic' a lot which in the UK is generally used only by 'alternative health' people and therefore the antithesis of what this book is all about. And I spotted 'ongoing' several times which made me wince each time. A word of warning - curiously, the text is very slightly smudgable.

This book is hard hitting and to the point. It skillfully (with lots of references, theoretical and ethical discussions) shows the fundamental errors in current practice, and presents the way forward that everyone should adopt. This book should be mandatory for all practicing and aspiring sports psychologists, trainers, psychology researchers, sports scientists, and policy makers.

One final note - Zella Moore's picture is the best author photo I've ever seen!

Rather, it was intended to show that David, in spite of a series of near disasters, was not under a curse; and it maintains that Solomon was the rightful heir to David's throne, even though popular expectations as well as Solomon's youth and parentage apparently led many contemporaries to question that judgment.

The issue was not "Who of David's sons will be king?" the author points out, but more likely " Is there any of David's sons fit to sit on the throne of David?"

The commentary offers a full general bibliography with additional specialized listings of up-to-date bibliographies at the beginning of each chapter and of each section of the Introduction. The Introduction discusses:

The volume provides a fresh translation with detailed explanatory notes concerning original word choices. Carefully evaluating textual evidence from the Masoretic Text, the Septuagint, Qumran texts, the Targums, and Latin texts, Anderson holds that no one of these has a monopoly as "the best witness" to the original text. Each variation is thus evaluated for the contribution it can make.
