Edited by

Rhona Flin, BSc, PhD, FRSE, FBPsS, holds the chair of Applied Psychology and is the director of the Industrial Psychology Research Centre at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. She was involved in the NOTECHS project to develop a non-technical skills rating tool for pilots, and supervised the ANTS, NOTSS, SPLINTS and ANTS-AP projects. She was awarded the Roger Green Medal for Human Factors in Aerospace (Royal Aeronautical Society) and the John Bruce Medal for Behavioural Science in Surgery (Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh). Her current research is on non-technical skills, surgeons’ intra-operative decision making and senior managers’ safety leadership.

George G. Youngson, CBE, MBChB, PhD, FRCPEdin, FRCSEd is an emeritus professor of paediatric surgery at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He is a past vice president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is the founder of its Patient Safety Board. His interests and contributions have included re-configuration of children’s surgical services in Scotland, surgical education, and clinical human factors as they affect surgical performance. He has been involved in the delivery of the NOTSS masterclass in various continents, including Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

Steven Yule, MA, MSc, PhD, is an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr Yule is an Organizational Psychologist and Human Factors scientist. He has been involved in the development of a number of assessment tools including NOTSS, SPLINTS and the Surgical Leadership Inventory (SLI). He has led the development of curricula in non-technical skills for surgical trainees and practising surgeons in the United Kingdom and United States. Dr. Yule is the director of education & research at the STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where the current research focus is on demonstrating the impact of surgeons’ non-technical skills on process and outcomes, and implementing scalable interventions to enhance patient safety. He is the vice chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) committee on non-technical skills and also on faculty at both the Center for Surgery and Public Health and Ariadne Labs for Health System Innovation, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/ Harvard School of Public Health.

But those observations would become available to Kepler only after Brahe's death. As intricately layered as a microchip, as compellingly plotted as a Columbo mystery, as scrupulously factual as its hero astronomer Tycho Brahe himself, Heavenly Intrigue launches a new form of literature: history of science and technology as philosophical adventure and psychological thriller. Ostensibly the saga of struggle and collaboration between 16th century astronomer Brahe and his protege and putative killer Johannes Kepler, this book rises to the level of an inspired meditation on the twisted paths and passions that guide the advance of a fallen race as it reaches toward the stars and wrestles with its God beyond.
In a beautiful consummation, the rigorous empirical and technological science that Brahe pioneered in his observatories gives birth over the centuries to yet more refined machines such as atomic absorption spectrometers and proton induced x-rays that enable twentieth century scientists to uncover his murder. In this book, the Gilders--Joshua, polymathic author with a gift for scientific analysis and Anne-Lee an investigative journalist with a linguistic bent--follow the trail of long lost or untranslated documents to solve, avenge and redeem the epochal crime.

Intriguing scientific history

The Gilders have combined short biographies of both Brahe and Kepler to tell a story about early modern science, centered on their startling theory that Brahe was murdered by Kepler.

I haven't personally researched these individuals outside this book, so I don't feel fully qualified to comment on the rather sensational accusation which other reviewers here have dismissed so emphatically. But even from this one book, it's clear that Brahe, although a nobleman, didn't own land or substantial wealth which he could leave to his survivors. His income depended entirely on his professional skills and high reputation, which his children didn't share. So his death was an utter disaster for his family, rendering his wife an implausible suspect, notwithstanding the theories of some reviewers here. Kepler, who by winding up with control of Brahe's unique and immensely valuable body of astronomical observations was the greatest beneficiary of the scientist's death, is at least a plausible suspect.

Some writers have suggested that Brahe's death was an acidental overdose. (Alchemists of the period, and Brahe was one, did employ mercury in various elixirs.) But the Gilders' argument that Brahe owuldn't have accidentally administered the very large does of mercury that killed him I found quite persuasive.

It's unfortunate that the discussion of this book has centered so strongly on the controversy of whether Kepler was the killer, because there's a lot of other interesting material here, all of it skillfully told. The importance of Brahe's contribution to science, the remarkable ingenuity with which Brahe compiled observations actually more accurate than were possible with early telescopes, the analysis of why both Brahe and Kepler still took astrology quite seriously, and the remarkable methods which made it possible to demonstrate beyond serious dispute, 400 years after the fact, that Brahe died of mercury poisoning and not the traditionally supposed bladder or kidney failure, are all clearly described and make the book worth reading even if you can't accept the authors' murder theory.

Taking the quest for knowledge to extremes

Historical murder mysteries are invariably captivating reading. When the case occurs three centuries in the past, prosecuting it would seem unspeakably difficult. However, modern forensic techniques can overcome the ravages of time, as the authors demonstrate. When the victim is one of the giants of his times, the effort almost seems worthy of investigation. Whether their case is proven, however, remains questionable.
The authors of this book take painstaking care to weave a plausible plot for the unusual death of Tycho Brahe in 1601. Brahe was the first serious observational astronomer in Europe. A devoted empiricist, he took nothing from past "authorities". Only "seeing it for himself" satisfied his need to unravel the mysteries of the heavens. Brahe's abilities and forceful personality brought him wide acclaim. It also brought him the most famous observatories in European history - Uraniborg Castle in Denmark and Benatky near Prague. In line with these fabulous sites, Brahe constructed massive instruments to enable him to make the most precise measurements of the heavens then available.
Brahe's obsession with accuracy was recorded in volumes of notes. Too busy watching the stars to analyse his own data, the numbers became the obsession of the defendant in the case, Johannes Kepler. Unlike Brahe's aristocratic background, Kepler was from straightened circumstances. His father had even abandoned the family to fight in the religious wars. His humble beginnings were later offset by an intolerable arrogance - the first step in the Gilder's brief. With monumental mathematical skills he initiated a new theory of planetary motion. For centuries, astrology, of which Kepler was a avowed advocate, was based on a circular orbit. Kepler constructed a new model of planet movement. The proofs, however, lay in Brahe's four decades of observations. How to obtain them became his life's obsession. According to the Gilders, it finally led him to murder.
The Gilders recount the sudden onset of urinary problems Brahe suffered during one of the ostentatious banquets he attended. Although there was a period of recovery, Brahe was again subject to the symptoms, finally succumbing. None suspected foul play might have been involved until a 20th Century analysis indicated something was amiss. From the data, the Gilders attempt to reconstruct a scenario. Eliminating various suspects and other causes, such as mishandling toxic materials, they conclude Brahe was the victim of Kepler's ambition to obtain Brahe's data. Although the case is strong, it's hardly air-tight. The biggest flaw is their inability to place Kepler with Brahe at the appropriate times. Motive is the strongest evidence, but hardly convincing enough. Still, this remains an exciting story, offering many insights into the characters' abilities and motivations. SIX Books in one Volume! And guess what: There is no Table of Contents much less any way to navigate the book other than reading it page by page starting with page one! The content is great and if you just want to plow ahead and read without caring what comes next, this could be for you. But not only is there on Table of Contents, the names of the six books contained herein are not even listed at the front!

I recommend this book to my colleagues and customers

I received a new book to review called Think Better. The subtitle is "An innovator's guide to productive thinking" and the book was written by Tim Hurson from Thinkx.

There are a LOT of new books on innovative thinking, or just innovation in general, so I was a little leery of another book, but I found this one to be very insightful and useful. There's a lot to like, and a lot to use, in this book, whether you happen to hail from the consulting and services oriented side of innovation, or are just starting out and want your internal corporate team to become more productive innovative thinkers.

I'll admit to being a bit jaded, and the first few sections of the book offer more of a history lesson about innovation and innovative thinking than I felt necessary, but for those approaching the topic for the first time, the concepts of the monkey mind and gator brain are compelling, since they demonstrate that our current methods of thinking avoid risk and most often simply react to threats or patterns. The book starts to get really interesting in the fourth chapter, which deals with resisting the urge to quickly arrive at an answer. Instead, the book encourages us to "Stay with the Question". In his approach, Hurson sucks us in, peeling the onion a little at a time and getting agreement, till we are in violent agreement that we must change drastically. Then he rolls out section three of his book, which outlines a process for creative and innovative thinking, supported by a number of simple but powerful tools.

The phases describe a method to generate better ideas, use some divergent then convergent thinking to stretch them, then move on to evaluate and determine which ideas should be considered for evaluation. What I also like is that he adds a step for deciding actions and assigning resources. Too often we get excited about selecting ideas for further investigation without determining and identifying the resources and plans necessary for the critical next steps. Along this process he introduces a number of tools: the I-cube or the C-5 or the DRIVE model, all of which are relatively easy to use and bring shape and focus around thinking and decision making that traditionally has been very subjective.

I like this book because it aligns to what seems right to me - a useful process that anyone can follow to obtain better thinking and better ideas. From our experience in larger organizations, a defined set of steps or phases is necessary to help people understand what has happened, what should happen now and what should happen next. I think the next thing Tim and his team will need to do is decide how to "scale" this capability so that the thinking permeates an organization and the approach becomes a common one across organizations rather than simply in enlightened pockets. Of course, that's something near and dear to my heart.

Creative productive thinking is a great first step. However, creativity without action is interesting but ultimately a sideshow. Tim defines a method to help people think more creatively, but also outlines a set of steps and tools to move an idea through a consistent process to an ultimate conclusion. That's moving from creativity to innovation, and eventually from ideas to new products, services or business models.

Think Better - a major new work on creatively confronting challenges

Tim Hurson's "Think Better" is not a treatise for armchair philosophers but an action-packed thriller, an exciting travel guide from theory to practice.

Productive thinking, Hurson argues, generates new things, as opposed to reproductive thinking, which refines what is known. It is the deliberate search for breakthrough rather than incremental change and it is powered by the alternation of creative and critical thinking.

The book presents a model which includes a rigorous method and superb practical tools and techniques that have been designed, developed and successfully tested in real life by the author. In the process, thinkers are urged to balance facts and feelings, information and imagination, aspirations and action and persevere through the "third third" of the brainstorm - that final stretch where the really great ideas emerge.

The clear writing style and the well-organized content are enhanced by quality story-telling that gives the book soul, with true stories (hospitals, insurance companies, furniture, space travel) as well as imaginary ones (how an airline might make its middle seats attractive).

Tim Hurson has clearly done a lot of productive thinking about productive thinking in this contemporary and comprehensive work, which constitutes a major contribution to the literature of creatively confronting challenges.

THINK BETTER by Tim Hurson is a thorough presentation of highly useful working tools for creative idea generation to creative problem solving.

Though I have been teaching the Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem Solving Process Model since 1978 I learned many things through the complete presentation that Tim makes in THINK BETTER.

In the book he provides his interpretation of the OP CPS Process and adds several excellent tools to make the OP CPS Process more effective in either workplace or personal problems.

This is an excellent book for people who are trying to learn much about how to use a complete process fro examining challenges, generating ideas, narrowing down those ideas into potential solutions and developing workable plans and to go through a planning process in order to increase the potential results.

Ngaire Woods is a Tenured Fellow at University College, Oxford, and Director of the Global Economic Governance Programme at Oxford University. She is the editor of The Political Economy of Globalization and Explaining International Relations since 1945 and the coeditor of Inequality, Globalization, and World Politics.

About the Author
Nihal Kularatna is the author of Power Electronics Design Handbook. He is an electronics engineer with over 30 years of experience in professional and research environments. He is a Fellow of the IEE (London), a Senior Member of IEEE (USA) and an honors graduate from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Presently, he is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Engineering, the University of Waikato, New Zealand. He worked at the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) in Sri Lanka as a Research and Development Engineer until 1990 when he reached Principal Researcher Engineer status. He was then appointed as CEO of ACCIMT in 2000. From 2002 to 2005 he was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Auckland. He is currently active in research in transient propagation and power conditioning area in power electronics, embedded processing applications for power electronics, and smart sensor systems. He has authored five books and is currently working on his sixth. His hobby is gardening cacti and succulents.
