Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood, by Jeffrey Marx

The bestselling inspirational book in which the author reunites with a childhood football hero, now a minister and coach, and witnesses a revelatory demonstration of the true meaning of manhood.

Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL football star and volunteer coach for the Gilman high school football team, teaches his players the keys to successful defense: penetrate, pursue, punish, love. Love? A former captain of the Baltimore Colts and now an ordained minister, Ehrmann is serious about the game of football but even more serious about the purpose of life. Season of Life is his inspirational story as told by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Jeffrey Marx, who was a ballboy for the Colts when he first met Ehrmann.

Ehrmann now devotes his life to teaching young men a whole new meaning of masculinity. He teaches the boys at Gilman the precepts of his Building Men for Others program: Being a man means emphasizing relationships and having a cause bigger than yourself. It means accepting responsibility and leading courageously. It means that empathy, integrity, and living a life of service to others are more important than points on a scoreboard.

Decades after he first met Ehrmann, Jeffrey Marx renewed their friendship and watched his childhood hero putting his principles into action. While chronicling a season with the Gilman Greyhounds, Marx witnessed the most extraordinary sports program he’d ever seen, where players say “I love you” to each other and coaches profess their love for their players. Off the field Marx sat with Ehrmann and absorbed life lessons that led him to reexamine his own unresolved relationship with his father.

Season of Life is a book about what it means to be a man of substance and impact. It is a moving story that will resonate with athletes, coaches, parents—anyone struggling to make the right choices in life.

From Booklist
When Pulitzer-winning investigative reporter Marx was a kid in the 1970s, he was a ballboy for the Baltimore Colts. One of the team captains was Joe Ehrmann, a larger-than-life party guy and star defensive lineman. After the death of his younger brother, Ehrmann changed his life, working in Baltimore's inner city and eventually becoming an ordained minister. Prompted by an article about the demolition of the Colt's legendary Memorial Stadium, Marx reconnected with Ehrmann and became fascinated both with his ministry and his work as a volunteer football coach at a Baltimore private school. This account of Ehrmann's career--and his effect on Marx's life--is inspirational without being preachy. Most amazing are the stories of the team Ehrmann coaches--a football team on which life lessons are more important than tackling fundamentals. The lessons extend to Marx himself, who describes how he was moved by Ehrmann's example to work on his relationship with his father. A sports story, yes, but much more, too. Wes Lukowsky

Review
Frank Deford, Sports Illustrated Jeffrey Marx has used the most violent of American games to show how men and boys should dare not be afraid to look for love. I was tremendously touched by Season of Life.

Christine Brennan, USA Today In a warm, passionate story, Jeffrey Marx finds a boyhood hero who ends up leading him on a fascinating personal journey. This is a book that every father and son will enjoy.

Carl Lewis, Olympic champion Season of Life should be required reading for every high school student in America and every parent as well.

Ronnie Lott, NFL Hall of Famer This is not a book you are just going to read and then forget about. You're probably going to read it again sometime. And you'll definitely want to tell family and friends about it. By sharing Season of Life with others, you will be helping to make this a better world.

Steve Moulton, ESPN Radio This is a life-changing book. You'd have to be a slug on a rock not to be impacted by the messages in this book.

Response re Elitism and Charleyhart
By Sailor X
First, full disclosure, I am a Gilman Alumnus from the 80's. There is no question that Gilman is an elite school built by and for the wealthy of Baltimore. However, thanks in large part to a previous Headmaster, the school began integrating early in the 60's and strove to have a diverse student body. I will guarantee right now that the school is far more diverse, in every sense than 99% of schools out there. The few examples given of "underprivileged" kids going to Gilman only scratch the surface, and don't include those who were not recruited for athletics, but rather academics. Some as young as 5 years old, long before any athletic talent becomes apparent. Charleyhart's comments are only partially founded in the reality of the school. Indeed, long before Joe Ehrman, the majority of Gilman men believed that in an ideal world places like Gilman would be available to all children. Many of us, a higher proportion, than the general public, have gone into service, whether as teachers in the poorest of neighborhoods, or as health professionals, advocates etc. I agree that Gilman students by and large are extremely privileged, simply by attending the school. However, for those that are from wealthy families, the lessons that they learn at Gilman aid them in aiding society through politics, philanthropy, and service. I will always be proud stand shoulder to shoulder with my brethren and anyone else who believes that all children deserve the Gilman experience. I understand that in order to make this a reality, those with power must be taught to understand the realities of the world. Gilman does that, and has always emphasized this. Charleyhart's review does not reflect this reality. I'm sure that he and I agree that all children should have this experience and like all Gilman men, will strive in whatever ways we can to make it so.

Caught-up in the story
By stevefstern
Jeffrey Marx began to contact "old" Baltimore Colts' players after "saying" goodbye to fabled Memorial Stadium just before its demolition in 2001. One of those players was Joe Ehrmann, the All-Pro leader of the Colts' "Sack Pack" in the 70's. Ehrmann had nicknamed him, Brillo, when Marx was a Colts' ballboy. At that time, Ehrmann was an example of a the stereo-typical fun-loving, hard partying and substance abusing athlete that "graces" the news from time to time. When Marx traced down this former Colt, he found that much had changed. After thirteen years of professional football, Ehrmann's "calling" had finally found him. He had since founded and led a wholistic ministry in Baltimore's inner city for 20 years and was volunteering as a coach at Baltimore's Gilman School. He had founded "Building Men for Others" and was also serving on the staff of a Baltimore area church. As Marx traces Joe's journey and the journey of the Gilman School's 2001 season, he is drawn into his own "journey to manhood." His "side-by-side" story-telling draws in the reader as well. A very good read and must reading for every father, for every father's son and for every woman who wants to better relate to the men in her life.

If you're reading the reviews you HAVE to read this book
By A. Adamsen
Whether you be a man or a woman this extremely well-written account offers insight into the emotional maturation of young men and the role coaches and other adults play in that process. It is a journey millions of Americans have gone through -- playing youth sports -- however most have unfortunately not had coaches with the compassion, wisdom, and courage of Biff Poggi and Joe Ehrmann. These coaches understand the responsibility and opportunity they have to positively affect the lives of their players. They challenge with compassion and instill an emotional intelligence and literacy that is all-too-rare in our society, let alone in young high school men.

Jeffrey Marx is a first-rate storyteller and Joe Ehrmann's journey is more than worthy of Mr. Marx's skill. Season of Life is truly a MUST read. You will be glad you did; and unless you overtly inhibit it, the world just might get a little better because you took the time to laugh, cry, and explore along with Jeff, Joe, Biff, and the team at Gilman High.
