Great Book

Lippincott has brought out another good text. The title says its a review but it is in fact an excellent textbook of around 400 pages. The book is well organized and the highlight of this book are the Illustrations. The illustrations are very explanatory and pleasing. The text is written with a clinical orientation and is easy to follow. The chapters are discussed with a physiological approach , for example there are chapters on Gaze, Eye movements etc. This is more relevant for the clinician rather than just having an anatomical approach. There are a few teaching boxes which i loved, the one on decerebrate and decorticate posturing, really well explained. There are a few questions at the end of each chapter which one may use for review. The student reading for the USMLE may find it a bit heavy, but life does not end with the USMLE. Neuroanatomy forms the basis of localizing a lesion for an Internist or a Neurologist. So understanding the subject forms the basis of the Neurological examination & diagnosis. I have tried other Neuroscience books too, like Young - Basic Clinical Neuroscience, BRS Neuroantomy by Fix and Snell Neuroanatomy and Seigel and Sapru-Essential Neuroscience. I would pick two of the best from MY point of view : 1) Lippincotts Illustrated Neuroscience by Krebs et. al. 2) Seigel and Sapru - Essential Neuroscience (a bit more detailed). The only suggestion I would have for LIR Neuroscience is that they could have a few CT/MRI's in the text or give a few of them with anatomical correlations towards the end. This is important for the USMLE coz they do put up a few CT/MR's. Overall a very good text, worth the money.

Too many mistakes

This book has all the right ideas about presenting information. However, there are so many many mistakes that it is hard to read it or recommend it. The mistakes are glaring because the information in the text and the accompanying figures do not match. For example, the text says 'antero-medial' while the accompanying figure says 'ventro-medial'. Which one do you trust? My guess is that most of the text is correct and figures wrong. But that hardly increases the confidence in the book. If you are reading the book for the Boards, it is just not worth the hassle. I am returning mine and am going to buy a 'serious' book and not one with fancy but incorrect illustrations.
BTW my book's publication year is listed as 2012 and not 2011 as it says on the product page.
