Good suppliment

Nice book and it can be very valuable, but when instructing with collocations I tend to select examples that arise during a given course, rather than making a course out of it. Using Collind Coubuild online (or any other online site) can do more than this book - going online makes the process student-centered and more active.

I do however see this book as a useful reference to be used from time to time. I simply feel that collocations are better illustrated via online searching and discovery. One strength I guess is that the book goes beyond the word level and has students see patterns in language - and for this it gets a 4-5.

Outstanding

One of the best "how to" books on metal detecting I have read. Very informative, step by step for all types of water conditions. Just the right amount of humor to keep your interest up. If you are a beginner, it is a "must read." If you are a seasoned pro, you will enjoy the humor of our hobby and learn or remember a few "tips and tricks." The graphics and photos really show what the author is referring to....not a guessing game like many of the other metal detecting books are. If you want to find beach treasure...this is a must read.

Not really a how to book on detecting the shallows

This book is a must have to understand the musings of the writer as he hunts for treasures from the coastlines of Myrtle Beach. He covers equipment to be used, wet suits, scoops and weather conducting to better hunt methods without wasting to much time. Tides and moon along with currants and wind action move the sand in and out of the surf zone to uncover more jewelry or cover it up. You get a feeling for how all this comes together and it could have been expanded to a lot more. Very little on detectors selected and settings which most think are the meat and potatoes of any book on treasure hunting they want to read. Its a good book which you should read.

Except for a brief interval in 1917, Americans perceived the Russian government (whether Czarist or Bolshevik) as despotic; Russians saw the United States as conspiring to prevent it from reaching its place in the sun. U.S. military intervention in Russia's civil war, with the aim of overthrowing Lenin's upstart regime, entrenched Moscow's fears. Soviet American relations, difficult before World War II--when both nations were relatively weak militarily and isolated from world affairs--escalated dramatically after both nations emerged as the world's major military powers. Powaski paints a portrait of the spiraling tensions with stark clarity, as each new development added to the rivalry: the Marshall Plan, the communist coup in Czechoslovakia, the Berlin blockade, the formation of NATO, the first Soviet nuclear test. In this atmosphere, Truman found it easy to believe that the Communist victory in China and the Korean War were products of Soviet expansionism. He and his successors extended their own web of mutual defense treaties, covert actions, and military interventions across the globe--from the Caribbean to the Middle East and, finally to Southeast Asia, where containment famously foundered in the bog of Vietnam.
Powaski skillfully highlights the domestic politics, diplomatic maneuvers, and even psychological factors as he untangles the knot that bound the two superpowers together in conflict. From the nuclear arms race, to the impact of U.S. recognition of China on detente, to Brezhnev's inflexible persistence in competing with America everywhere, he casts new light on familiar topics. Always judicious in his assessments, Powaski gives due credit to Reagan and especially Bush in facilitating the Soviet collapse, but also notes that internal economic failure, not outside pressure, proved decisive in the Communist failure. it's hard to cover eighty years in 300 pages

I had to read this book as part of my history graduate studies. While Powaski has a notable orthodox lean to the Cold War spin, towards the end, he notes "post-revisionistly" that both Russia and U.S. have to take blame. Not an easy read and with little if any original research (no Russian primary sources), but quite informative as a narrative of Cold War history...would have liked more information on the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-5, which sort of started all the ill feelings in the first place.

A Majory Disappointment

On a positive note, Powaski correctly (I think) dates the start of the Cold War from the Russian Revolution, not 1945, and implies that the US/USSR clash was inevitable from a geopolitical standpoint. However, considering that the book was published in 1999, four years after the Venona trasncripts were declassified, the author lamely succumbs to the politically correct view that the "Red Scare" in the US of the 1950s clouded American decision-making. We now know that McCarthy, for all his bluntness, erred on the low side in talking about Soviet/communist penetration of the Roosevelt/Truman administrations. For example, he cites the removal of two State Department officers for daring to question American support for Chiang Kai Shek and suggesting a more "realistic" China policy. He fails to mention that US China policy was directed during the 1940s by a cabal of (now) proven KGB agents, at least one of whom later defected to Communist China, and that the Truman administration, to protect itself politically, sheltered them and then conducted the only witch-hunt of the 1950s, that directed against McCarthy and anyone who provided him with information. It's past time that historians stopped concealing evidence.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the criminal justice program at the State University of New York at Albany, earning his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Brandon C. Welsh is a Professor of Criminology at Northeastern University and Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement in Amsterdam. He received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England. His research interests focus on the prevention of crime and delinquency and evidence-based social policy. Dr. Welsh has published extensively in these areas and is an author or editor of ten books.

Very pleased

In my opinion this book is very interesting. I'm criminal justice law student and I've read lot of textbooks for my classes. Compared to other criminal justice books this book does not just give boring skew rates and tell you what to do. It gives you actual interesting examples. It is well organized. I'm telling you I'm not the happiest person when I have to read textbook but I always look forward to reading this one since I've only read two chapters. I also like its hard cover which allows me to read without any worries that I have to hold my book up straight. ☺️

It is an excellent introductory book in stochastic processes. But as the author have written in Afterword section of his book : "The two glaring omissions are the theories of Brownian motion and Martingales".

Anyway, I strongly recommend this book for begining of stochastic processes.

Fantastic for whom have knowledge of statistical and probability theories

It's a great book. Very well writen, full of proofs (some of them not so detailed, but perfectly understandable) and covers almost everything you need to know to start working with stochastic processes. However, a good knowledge about statistical and probability theories is more then desirable.

Excellent value, though just a bit formal

You can see by examining the table of contents that this book contains a very complete non-measure theoretic treatment of stochastic processes. The main text reads a bit "theorem-proofy" for my taste, and could arguably use some more diagrams (though no one else in the reviews has expressed such a view, so maybe that's just my problem). But this is partly offset by the large number of detailed examples.

Another plus: this is one of the few texts I've seen that treats the Bernoulli process explicitly - a whole chapter - rather than just starting with the Poisson process. I think this helps create a fuller picture of these processes, as the Bernoulli is essentially the discrete time analog (no "anti" pun intended!) of the Poisson.

The text goes on to present a very detailed treatment of Markov process in both discrete and continuous time, including a chapter on optimal stopping, which is not often treated at this level. You will find detailed treatments of branching and queuing models, renewal theory, and really just about everything that can be treated without measure theory. This is probably the best reference available on the subject at this level, especially in terms of content-to-price ratio.

Although I would supplement this book with a more elementary treatment (such as the excellent albeit pricey Bertsekas text, which contains some very easy to read chapters on stochastic processes), it is a valuable addition to the Dover catalog and should not be missed.

Edwin Simpson, Barrister, New Square Chambers, Barclay's Bank Lecturer, Christ Church, Oxford University,Miranda Stewart, Associate Dean (Engagement) and Director of Tax Studies, Melbourne Law School

Edwin Simpson is a Tutor in Law and the Barclays Bank Lecturer in Taxation at Christ Church College, Oxford. He he teaches in public law and maintains an interest in the fields of trusts and tax and lectures on the Oxford B.C.L. on tax avoidance. He was called to the Bar in 1990. He appears frequently at Public Inquiries considering Highway matters, Town and Village Greens, and the mapping of access land pursuant to Countryside Act 2000; and advises in connection with all aspects of such work.

Miranda Stewart is a Professor of Law, Associate Dean (Engagement) and Director of Tax Studies at Melbourne Law School. She has many years experience in tax law in Australia and overseas. She is an International Fellow of the Centre of Business Taxation at Oxford University and was recently a visiting scholar at Christ Church, Oxford on the Melbourne-Oxford Faculty Exchange. Before joining the Faculty in 2000, Miranda taught at New York University School of Law in the leading International Tax program in the US. She previously worked in the Australian Tax Office on tax policy and legislation and as a solicitor at Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks. Miranda's current research is on tax law and development, international tax coordination, and issues of gender and tax.

Strongly prefer the 2nd edition to this 3rd one

In my doctoral studies, I learned program planning with the 1st edition of this book. Over the last 13 years, it has been at my side as I administered educational programs for museums, corporate training departments, and institutions of higher education. When the 2nd edition came out, I updated my own copy. Frequently, I purchased the book for my own staff.

When I learned a 3rd ed was out, I was thrilled because I hoped it would incorporate the many exciting technological developments since the 2nd edition was written. While it does do this, it also left online (and not in print) MANY of the helpful figures and exhibits that are at the heart of what make this an ongoing user's manual.

IF I were teaching a program planning course, I'd have to use this 3rd edition and spend the time pulling online exhibits (accessible with purchase of written text) to the attention of my students. As I practice program planning, however, I simply do not have the time.

The third edition is already shelved (I'll pull it only to look for some insights on new technologies); the 2nd edition is back on my desk.Planning Programs for Adult Learners: A Practical Guide for Educators, Trainers, and Staff Developers, 2nd Edition
