About the Author
John Harte is Professor of Energy and Resources at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is author of "Patient Earth (with Robert Socolow, 1971), "Consider a Spherical Cow (1975) and "Toxics A to Z: A Guide to Everyday Pollution Hazards (with Cheryl Holdren, Richard Schneider, and Christine Shirley, California, 1991). "Toxics A to Z has been named Outstanding Reference Book of 1993 by the American Library Association.

Everybody should read this book

This book provides an excellent viewpoint on physical problem solving by "thinking outside the box". I provides great approach to setting up all types of physical problems. I found the book very useful to all types of science. You don't have to be an environmental scientist to benefit from this text. The example problems are very good and the examples stand out in my memory for a long time -- very helpful for future challenges.

my second copy of this book

Lent one to a friend. To people who know high school algebra but avoided calculus in college, or the biologist or sociologist who want to know how to consider things quantitatively, this book is perfect. For the technical remainder who want good insights into many environmental processes and questions, it's also a great introduction. Don't miss Harte's follow-on "Consider a Cylindrical Cow".
